CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia baseball team’s annual fall intrasquad competition, the Orange & Blue World Series, begins at 4 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 1) at Davenport Field. Rosters for the two teams were unveiled Monday by head coach Brian O’Connor.
Assistant coach Matt Kirby will manage the Orange Team, while student coach Tyler Cannon will coach the Blue Team. Whit Mayberry (R-Sr., Alexandria, Va.) is slated to start Game 1 on the mound for the Blue, while Josh Sborz (So., McLean, Va.) will get the ball to start the opening game for the Orange.
The series will consist of seven games. All games will be either of nine or seven innings; this will be determined prior to each game.
There will be a pair of three-game series (Games 1-3 and Games 4-6 are separate series) as well as a Game 7. If a given team wins both games of either series, the third game of that series will be played based on run differential of the first two games to allow the trailing team a chance to still win the series. Each team is encouraged to score as many runs as possible and not worry about running up the score.
There is no admission charge for Orange and Blue World Series games and all seating is general admission. Free parking will be available in the University Hall lot. Fans should plan to enter Davenport Field for all fall games along the first-base line and not the main gate. The best route to reach this entrance is by using the Copeley Road crosswalk, the sidewalk and the road adjacent to the Lannigan Field track complex.
Concession and merchandise stands also will be open.
Virginia owns the most wins in Division I baseball over the last five seasons, with 245 victories. Following a 50-win season and trip to the NCAA Super Regional for the fourth time in five seasons in 2013, Virginia returns 23 letterwinners, including seven position starters, from its 2013 squad. UVa welcomes nine newcomers to the program this season.
